After years of travel, I've come to appreciate the fine art of packing and I am slowly learning how to pack a suitcase and how to pack lightly. As an additional luggage security measure, use plastic or nylon filament duct tape to completely wrap your luggage to prevent it from opening accidentally when dropped by baggage handlers.
People who traveled needed to take their personal belongings with them and in the beginning a trunk was the most popular and practical luggage option. There are a number of companies that can be looked up to for good luggage bags. Shorter trips may allow for a carry-on only, but I would never take more than one checked bag no matter how long you are traveling.
There are many stories of baggage theft, therefore avoid all appearances of wealth to minimize the risk. Suitcases are made of heavy duty materials that can take the beating of conveyor belts and being hauled, carted and tossed around a lot. In addition to the TSA locks, easy clip and two or three dial locks are used in straps.
Get some Samsonite luggage and you will be just fine. Hopefully, by lightening your load and only packing the necessities, you will have room in your suitcase for everything to fit and it won't get wrinkled.
